In 1962, my father was Chief Mechanic on an Indy 500 racing team. He brought home two hammers used for changing tires - knockoff style in those days. I used one of these as an inspiration for this animation.
Critics will note that the tires are dirt track and not pavement, so there is a mismatch of sorts. However, we used those hammers later on in midget racing. Aluminum handle, brass head, very effective tool.

This is a picture taken along pit road. The writing on the picture says it all. My father is the one in the middle of the pit crew.
Closeup of Bob Veith. As you can see by the writing on the hood, the car owner was Ray Crawford, designer/builder was Edgar Elder, and crew chief, my father, Bob Bogan.
